[06.07.11] Girls' Generation's 1st Japanese Album Tops Oricon Weekly Chart

After its release on June 1, Girls' Generation's 1st Japanese Album "Girls' Generation" sold 232,000 copies in its first week and reached first place on Oricon's Weekly Album ranking. With this mark, Girls' Generation broke their fellow SM Entertainment labelmate BoA's previous record for first week album sales by a foreign artist, a record which BoA held for approximately 9 years and 3 months.

This marks the second time that Girls' Generation set a record in their first week of sales, as their debut Japanese single "Genie" topped the charts in the first week, which had not occurred for a foreign artists's debut single in 8 years and 3 months, that being t.A.T.u.'s debut single.

The girls, who are currently in the midst of their first solo concert tour through Japan, commented "We are thankful towards the fans that our album became number 1 on Oricon. Of course the ranking makes us happy, but especially the fact that lots of people listened to our album does also. We hope sincerely from the bottom of our hearts that this album can give the people of Japan even a little bit of courage and the light of hope."
