Yuri Photographed with 'Fashion King' Script

Yuri, who is making her first attempt at acting as a regular in the upcoming SBS Monday/Tuesday drama “Fashion King”, has garnered attention for looking like she is in love with her script from the show.

Photos from the site where the drama is being recorded in New York were recently revealed.  Among these photos included shots of Yuri reading her script with a serious face.

Yuri stated, “A singer only needs to focus her energy for a short period of time to cause an impact.  But to make an impact as an actor, you have to take a deep breath and live as that character, so I think it’s harder (to be an actor).  Lately, I’ve been enjoying this new challenge.”

Official “Fashion King” photos of Yuri have also been released, and you can check them out on the show’s official website.  A teaser of Yuri recording for the show has also been released, and you can view this below. “Fashion King” is scheduled to start broadcasting on March 19th.

Seohyun Gives Her Thoughts About Appearing on an American Talk Show and a French TV Show

Seohyun Gives Her Thoughts About Appearing on an American Talk Show and a French TV Show

2012022900102868044_1

Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun revealed how they almost did not appear on the popular American talk show “Late Show with David Letterman”. She told this story on SBS’s “Strong Heart” on February 28th.

Seohyun surprised everyone by saying, “While we were happy about being asked to appear on the ‘Late Show with David Letterman’, after discussing it with the members, we came to the decision not to go on.” She added, “It was because ‘Late Show with David Letterman’ is a talk show that is carried out while sitting, and we would be at a disadvantage when performing on their stage. Because it was a talk show stage, it was too small for all of our members to even stand in a line.” Seohyun continued, “But after giving it some more thought, we decided to go on the show and recorded after rehearsing numerous times.”

Seohyun also talked about the behind-the-scenes story of appearing on a French TV show.

During the recording, Seohyun revealed, “We were the first Korean singers to appear on the popular French program ‘Le Grand Journal’. It was an honor because it is a program that has had Beyonce, Usher, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, and other Hollywood stars on it.” She added, “I wasn’t just happy thinking that we were there as representatives of Korea in France, but I was really surprised when the audience cheered for us in Korean.”

If you guessed a February 29th podcast release then you are correct! Sorry, no prizes to give out this time, but if you really want, I will give you a shout-out on air!

So hello everyone, DJ Giggles a.k.a Michelle is back with Soshified’s second Writers’ Podcast! Thank you to everyone who took the time and gave our January edition a listen. On behalf of the entire Writers’ team, we’d like to say thank you for all the support! On the other hand, for those people who haven’t yet listened to the January podcast, shame on you!! No, I’m just kidding. But seriously, if you haven’t checked it out, be sure to do so when you have the time! If this is your first time listening to the writers interact, try not to be overwhelmed. We’re just a bunch of silly people who enjoy goofing around and spazzing about our favorite nine girls.

This month’s podcast will feature the familiar voices of Andrea (letaengbutt), Jon (MoonSoshi9), Sharon (taengsoshi), and myself (FrozenArctic) as well as two writers who weren’t present last time, Michael (michaelroni) and Becca (spiceshoe). Unfortunately, Roy (LetsGo) was supposed to join us as well, but due to computer and technological issues, we were not able to insert his recording into the broadcast. For all of Roy-unnie’s fans who were just dying to hear his voice, we apologize for any inconvenience, and we promise to bring him back for next month’s podcast!

During this podcast, you will come to understand that we love going off-topic as we talk about various Girls’ Generation events that have occurred over the month. From a summary of a successful Second Asia Tour to trading posters and gushing about an unforgettable fan sign event, give that lovely play button a click and join in on the fun! You might let a giggle slip here and snicker to yourself there, and guess what? That’s perfectly alright! So go ahead, sit down and unwind as you listen to Soshified’s talented writers ramble on about anything and everything Girls’ Generation related! Who knows, maybe you’ll find a segment of the show you really like and play it over and over again. Don’t worry, we don’t judge!

And before you want to throw something at me for writing yet another wall of text, allow me to announce the winner of last month’s contest! But before we do that, here are the correct answers to the game. If you guessed all five correct, give yourself a tap on the shoulders and congratulations on a job well done!

1. SeraphKY: “We stay fresh by being silly.” – Jessica
2. taengsoshi: “I want the broom in Harry Potter.” – Sooyoung
3. residentbenchwarmer: “My forehead is pretty too.” – Taeyeon
4. letaengbutt: “Fany’s butt is pretty sexy.” – Taeyeon
5. MoonSoshi9: “Welcome to the hell.” – Sunny

Unfortunately, we cannot give prizes to everyone who entered with the correct answers because as we all know, SONEs are forever broke. Instead, we picked one winner and this lucky SONE will win a…What will he/she win again? Sorry, we don’t really know yet either! However, without further ado, DJ Giggles and the Writers’ team would like to congratulate takenine for getting all five answers correct and winning the draw! Please PM residentbenchwarmer or FrozenArctic to discuss all the details.

Enjoy the podcast everyone and thank you to all who participated!

Recount of Girls’ Generation’s Appearance on ‘Kim Jungeun’s Chocolate’ in 2009 by PD

Recount of Girls' Generation's Appearance on 'Kim Jungeun's Chocolate' in 2009 by PD

bbc2ce7d812962c79a9037d74d7e4d3f

[Editor's note: Below, is a recount of what the PD of " Kim Jungeun's Chocolate", Lee Jiwon, decided for the episode which featured Girls' Generation back on the 15th of August, 2009, as well as how he felt during the preparation for it.]

This is how it started.

I wanted to make a unique stage, starting with “Gee” and ending with “Tell Me Your Wish”, since it was a special episode. No one can ever get sick of these two songs, but I wanted to show a new side of the girls other than the ones that viewers can see in normal music programs. SM agreed with my idea and the girls started to practice in the midst of their killer schedules.

“Gee” was rearranged to a version that starts with a piano-jazz-like piece and continues on into a strong, rock-like version. We also prepared a six minute non-stop dance battle that shows the power only Girls’ Generation has. Apart from that, close attention was paid to the members who were hidden behind other members such as maknae Seohyun’s piano solo and the dancing queen Hyoyeon’s power stage. We were worried that all the effort would not be shown to their entirety and worked hard to correct and edit one move, or one facial expression, to make a perfect stage. Also, the musical part of the stages were prepared so that we wouldn’t be shamed anywhere in the music industry.

Even after all that work, I felt that it wasn’t enough. The girls’ appeals are not only in their songs, but in their personalities too. I didn’t want to waste time asking for their ideal types so that what people called, “Variety Talk”, could be discussed. That wasn’t the “Chocolate” I was thinking about. This is also because of the fact that all of these trivial things are known to people since Girls’ Generation is the nations’ sister group. I wanted to make it meaningful for the viewers and also help the girls at the same time.

This thought became more solid when I met them in the band practice room to practice the song. They were the same as other twenty year-olds who laugh freely, chatter, and pull pranks on one another. Even if I was only there for an hour or so, it was enough for me to see and confirm the fact that they each have their own personalities, how close they are to each other, and how much they care for each other. The thought that said “I want to show this” flashed across my mind like lightning.

As “Tell Me Your Wish” became more popular, Girls’ Generation got busier. To match the title of the song, many variety shows where Girls’ Generation had to grant someone’s wish were aired.

In various talk programs and shows, Girls’ Generation had to sing, dance and laugh for the viewers. It’s true that their popularity is something to thank for, but the girls could not stay at home with their families and had to always smile even though they are at the age where they should stay home and be spoiled.

I didn’t want to tell them to grant someone’s wish again. I wanted to know the wishes the girls’ themselves had in their minds, and I wanted to reverse the situation and grant their wish, even if it’s a small, trivial thing.

I thought of a program called “Change” in which I was in charge of last year. The participant who became another person with special make-up almost always named their families when they were asked who they wanted to meet first. The people who called their family are the people they always live with, fight with, and upset the most. Despite these facts, when the participants, such as Hyori, Hoyoung, Tablo and Ok Dongja [Editor's note: Ok Dongja is a famous comedian] met their families, they always shed tears. It was a very difficult, yet meaningful program to me, who thought that “family”, as a subject, was boring.

We casted maknae Seohyun’s mother through the managers, while keeping it a secret from the girls. Her mother told us that she hasn’t seen her daughter in over a month and that she was sorry for not celebrating Seohyun’s birthday with her last month. She went on to say that she would do anything for her only daughter and eventually agreed to appear on the episode. Since this wasn’t a planned hidden camera, we held meetings after meetings on this until the very last night.

After the recording started, Seohyun’s mother, who was disguised as a regular audience with a mask, wished for Girls’ Generation to teach her daughter aegyo. She also asked for Girls’ Generation to read her letter to her daughter. Girls’ Generation, who only thought that they were granting another wish, started to talk amongst themselves. When Kim Jungeun, the MC, asked maknae Seohyun to hug her, the girls’ eyes were already red.

Seohyun’s mother hugged Seohyun and took her mask off to wish Seohyun a happy belated birthday before giving her the baby diary she had planned to give to Seohyun on her wedding day. The girls all started crying and the MC also turned around to hide her tears.

The recording scene became a silent sea of tears.

When the MC told the girls that they could say something to their mothers if they wanted to, Taeyeon, as expected of a leader, took the lead and said, “The word ‘mom’ is a forbidden word among the members of Girls’ Generation!”

At this time, Tiffany, who was crying the hardest, raised her hand and said, “I…want to talk.”

While we were preparing for the episode with Girls’ Generation, there was something that the managers sincerely requested, and it was to take note of what we say while talking about the girls’ families as it is a difficult topic for some of the girls.

The staff members who knew the basis of the stories were trying hard not to emphasize the word “mom” as they were also worried that the girls might get hurt.

With a smile on her face, Tiffany started by saying, “This is the first time I’m talking about this..” and said a brief, but beautiful hello to her mother. Afterwards, she regained her strength and said this, ”I’m very thankful that you gave me eight very special sisters instead,” and hugged every one of her members. The other members also hugged one another and said words of encouragement while wiping the tears off of each other’s face. Seohyun’s mother also hugged each of them and said that Seohyun learned a lot of aegyo because of the eight older sisters. Even me, who was watching in the sidelines and directing the cameras, became emotional and couldn’t stop my voice from shaking.

Honestly, even while writing this at this moment, my eyes are tearing up. One of my sunbaes clicked his teeth at me and said, “Tsk tsk, what are we going to do if the PD has such a soft heart…”

After the talk, during the break time, we made an emergency announcement. There were a lot of reporters in the audience, so we told them that this is a very private matter, hence it may not be aired and requested for them to not publish it in the news. After that, I ran to their waiting rooms because I was worried about them. I had been trying to give them a special gift in the beginning, but all I could think of was how sorry I was now.

With a worried face, I started looking for Tiffany. “Fany-ah!” Surprisingly, Tiffany ran up to me and hugged me at once. Tiffany, who was still teary-eyed, held both of my hands and said, “Thank you PD-nim~!” The girl smiled at me and said that she was really happy and thankful for a wonderful gift and that I may include this in the episode; to a person who was still sorry for what he did.

For this girl, I was very thankful, proud, sorry and my heart ached so much. Fany-ah..and kids.. thank you and I’m sorry…

Honestly, I don’t really know about these kids. I’ve never even met them properly until this time. Just like every other samchon fan, I was just pleased by the cuteness the name, “Girls’ Generation”, gives off. However, these girls became very dear to me because of this recording session. Not as a fan and not as a man, but as an older brother who wishes that the young and fragile sisters don’t ever get hurt.

I’m sure that I am delusional but it feels like I’ve really become one of their family members. As the group’s popularity increases, it is very natural that there will be different kinds of rumors. There is a lot of talk about loners, fights and curses about Girls’ Generation, but one thing I can say out of experience, is the fact that those words are garbage and not even worth a second thought.

To each other, the members of Girls’ Generation are like blood sisters, loving mothers and beautiful daughters. The group of girls was actually a family named “Girls’ Generation”. Through this recording session, I was introduced to a loving family.

It started with “Let’s grant Girls’ Generation’s wishes” in the beginning, but in the end, I received a big gift from Girls’ Generation.

The Best of the Best: Top 5 Non-Title Tracks

The Best of the Best: Top 5 Non-Title Tracks

best of the best

Hello and welcome to the fifth edition of "The Best of the Best": a countdown of the best in Girls' Generation music, CFs, and related media. While this time I went over the Top 5 Non-title tracks, you guys can tell me what you want to see next by voting in the poll at the end of the article. More votes are always better, so please tell me what you want! As for this edition, read through my explanation for each choice then leave your own opinions of the best non-title tracks in the comments section! I'll leave a link to the respective song at the start of each explanation. Let's start shall we?

5. Etude

Following the smash hit Genie on their second mini album, “Etude” certainly brings something both different and similar to the table. Reminding us of the cuter songs that the girls were known for in the past, it mixes a happy atmosphere with an upbeat tone and catchy rhythm. While I liked it a lot when the second mini album was first released, Etude  has really blended in with some of the girls’ other songs as the years have passed, not really showing its staying power. Its nostalgic value certainly makes it stand out on a mini-album which had a little bit of everything, but doesn’t make it too special on this countdown compared to the other unique tracks.

4. Destiny

“Destiny” brings a distinct electronic sound and is a track that is different from the rest of the songs on the “Gee” mini-album. The song definitely goes a step further by showing the variety and potential that the girls are capable of. While the song is fast paced, the bridge in the middle showcases the amazing vocals the group is known for, creating a perfect mix. The track has its set of advantages in terms of its sound and use of vocals, but lacks a special beat or catchy rhythm that could propel it higher on the countdown.

3. Oscar

“The Boys” was an album chock full of tracks that were more positive and very upbeat, so the few tracks that didn’t follow that trend and tried to be different stood out more for me. “Oscar” is a perfect example of a track that tried to do something unique and inevitably succeeded. The song starts off with a beat that signals it is far more darker and aggressive than many of the other happy-go-lucky songs that fill the album. The song does well in showing how the girls are growing from bubblegum pop to more mature fare. An addictive chorus which spells out the namesake of the song, coupled with a climax full of a deep electronic sound, make “Oscar” an electrifying track which surely deserves the number three place on our countdown.

2. I’m In Love With The HERO

“I’m In Love With The HERO” begins with a pulsating beat that is unlike anything you’ve ever heard; a repetitive string of words with a booming sound that blows you off your feet. The catchy beat seems to shift its tone at a breakneck pace but uses that swift rhythm to its utmost advantage by sounding crisp with each transition in the track. While electronic sounds and autotune do dominate what seems like most of the song, it doesn’t deteriorate the quality of it. The track selectively utilizes the girls’ full vocal power during key sections of the song, which creates an amazing mix with the song’s addictive beat. This song would be number one if not for the fact that the top song on this countdown does everything better, with more to boot.

1. you-aholic

Starting off with the words “psycho, sexy, super magic,” you know that this song is going to be something special. This song, at least to me, seems to implement a lot of English phrases into key parts of the track, especially into the build up of the chorus as well as the chorus itself, which goes from “I’m a you-aholic,” to “you’re the gin inside my tonic”; this gives a more modern feel to me and widens its appeal to international audiences. It has the perfect aspects of a hit song (if only it was promoted in some fashion besides their concert): it contains a beat that is nothing short of extremely catchy, a mix of phrases that are unique and easily repeatable (up to this day, “you-aholic” and the “gin inside my tonic” can be heard among SONES), and effectively showcases vocals that many of the girls’ more popular songs lack, by showing them singing at a fast pace during some parts of the track while letting them power through with their voices during the slower portions. A perfect mixture of the electronic sound that gave Girls’ Generation’s Japanese album its signature sound is present here, along with just about everything else you can ask for.

Learn Korean With Soshi: February Edition

Learn Korean With Soshi: February Edition

Header Image

Hello, and welcome to the February edition of Learn Korean with Soshi. February has been a big month for Soshified, and it is time to introduce five new Korean phrases to everyone. You can type these out on your computer by pressing the keys located below each phrase, and make sure you know how to type them out by reading this post. If you’re fired up by these phrases and feel that five isn’t enough, you can view the past editions here. Happy learning!

같이 불러요 (Gachi bulleoyo) = Sing (it) together
How to type: rkxdl qnffjdy

During one of their performances in KBS1 Open Concert, Taeyeon mentioned that they were going to sing Gee, resulting in a lot of cheers from the crowd. Upon hearing their reactions, Hyoyeon also invited the audience to sing along. 같이 means together, 불러요 means to sing (부르- “to sing” + polite sentence ending -어요).

An example situation where the phrase 같이 불러요 would be used:
To celebrate their first time hosting Music Core in 2012, Taeyeon dragged Seohyun to their favourite karaoke place. They took turns singing songs, before the maknae slumped down on the seats, claiming that she was tired. Taeyeon frowned, but then she scanned the song list and found DJ Doc’s “I’m This Kind of Person”. She handed the mic over to Seohyun and said, “같이 불러요”.

너 그거 어떻게 알았어? (Neo geugeo eoddeohge arasseo?) = How did you know that?
How to type: sj rmrj djEjgrp dkfdkTdj

In Unstoppable Marriage, Yuri and Sooyoung acted as two girls who were obsessed with another character in the story, Wang Sabaek. Yuri predicted Sooyoung’s actions, and that left the latter to question Yuri’s methods. 너 means you, 그거 means that, 어떻게 means how, and 알았어 means knew (알- “know” + past tense particle -았 + intimate sentence ending -어).

An example situation where the phrase 너 그 것 어떻게 알았어? would be used:
Jessica’s eyes widened when Sooyoung asked the older girl about a surprise party the other girls were planning. When Jessica failed to convince the shikshin otherwise, she asked, “너 그 것 어떻게 알았어?” but Sooyoung responded with a shrug. “You don’t lie very well,” Sooyoung pointed out. She added, “Plus, you don’t wake up early on Saturdays. Ever.” Jessica raised her arms in defeat. She had to figure out a way to explain this to the others later.

배고파 (Baegopa) = (I’m) hungry
How to type: qorhvk

After spending quite some time practicing for their performance of “Into The New World” for SBS Idol Big Show the next day, the girls decided to sit down and take a break. Everyone was busy catching their breaths, and Jessica exclaimed she was hungry. 배고파 means (I’m) hungry as a whole, but the phrase was actually a combined form of two words: 배 “stomach” and 고프다 “to be hungry”.

An example situation where the phrase 배고파 would be used:
“Hey, let’s take a break,” Yoona called out to her friends after two hours of hiking. Truthfully, Yoona was actually fond of school trips but it’s a whole different story after being forced to hike up the woods during lunch time. Yoona and her friends then sat down on some rocks. She then rummaged through her bag, disappointed that her chocolate bar was finished during the first 30 minutes of the hike. “Do any of you have extra snacks?” she asked, “배고파.”

안 오면 나 진짜 울거야 (An omyeon na jinjja ulgeoya) = If (you) don’t come, I’ll seriously cry
How to type: dks dhaus sk wlsWk dnfrjdi

As part of their mission for Factory Girl, the girls had to invite numerous guests for an Elle Girl magazine event. Most of the stars they called had to reject the offer, reasoning that they had another parallel schedule. Tiffany had her ways of convincing people, though, by threatening that she would cry if they didn’t come. 안 means not, 오면 means if (you) come (오- “come” + -면 “if”), 나 means I/me, 진짜 means really/seriously (informal), 울거야 means will cry (울- “to cry” + plain sentence ending -거야, which implies willingness to do the action).

An example situation where the phrase 안 오면 나 진짜 울거야 would be used:
“Oppa! How are you?” Sunny exclaimed into her phone, happy that an old friend of hers had called even though she had rejected his calls countless times, as they always clashed because of practice sessions or recordings. The two friends chatted, and he asked when her first musical performance would be, she answered, “March 28,” and then said, “안 오면 나 진짜 울거야”. He laughed, and promised that he would come to see Sunny’s theatrical debut.

이거 진짜 못해요 (Igeo jinjja mothaeyo) = I really can’t do this
How to type: dlrj wksWk ahtgody

Instead of arguing who Kyungsan likes most, one of the crew suggested that Jessica and Tiffany do an affection test. Jessica immediately refused, saying that she couldn’t do it. 이거 means “this”, 진짜 means really/seriously (informal), 못해요 means cannot (못 is a negation related to one’s ability + 하- “to do” + polite sentence ending -어요).

An example situation where the phrase 이거 진짜 못해요 would be used:
“Yuri, are you sure about this?” Taeyeon asked nervously when the younger girl brought her out to a wall climbing place. Yuri had assured Taeyeon that it was her new hobby, and she’d love it if the leader could wall climb alongside her. “이거 진짜 못해요,” she admitted, but Yuri tightened Taeyeon’s safety gear anyway. “Grab that rock on your top right, and put your left foot on that blue rock over there,” Yuri instructed. Taeyeon sighed, as she knew that there was no backing out now.

Girls’ Generation’s New PV for ‘Time Machine’ to Feature Imada Kouji

Girls' Generation's New PV for 'Time Machine' to Feature Imada Kouji

snsd-japanese-repackaged-album-the-boys-1

Girls’ Generation’s first Japanese album, “Girls’ Generation”, which was released on June 31st 2011, reached a shipping record of one million copies, a first in the history of Japan as a Korean artist . There will be a new music video to continue the rapid advancement of Girls’ Generation into Japan. The music video will be for their new song “Time Machine”, and comedian Imada Kouji will appear in the video.

“Time Machine” is a new ballad song that was recorded for last year’s repackaged album release on December 28th, titled "Re:Package Album: Girls' Generation ~The Boys~". On February 25th, the song will also be promoted in Girls’ Generation’s CF of UHA Mikukato “E-ma Nodoame”.

Imada Kouji is a self-proclaimed Girls’ Generation fan and leads in knowledge and enthusiasm in the entertainment world, so the staff of Girls’ Generation made the offer to include him.

On the day of shooting, which fell on Valentine’s Day, Imada was not concerned that it was a day off and continued on with the schedule. He was fully motivated and looked forward the challenge. Imada Kouji was often seen as a strong man, but for this he passionately acted out the role of a weak man. He was to cry alone in a room while remembering about the unforgettable past.

Imada Kouji commented on his performance and said, “This is my happiest job ever since a couple of years ago. Before the manager finished talking, I enthusiastically said, ‘I’ll do it.’ The filming was really fun. I gave it my all. When I saw the proposal written with ‘Girls’ Generation Tenth Member’, I felt complete like cutting the goal-tape. I want to receive a business card that says ‘Girls’ Generation Tenth Member’. As one of the fans of Girls’ Generation in the entertainment world, I’m glad they offered me the spot. To the other entertainers who are fans of Girls’ Generation, I feel like I have to tell them the stage has changed (laughs).”

Furthermore, the music video for “Time Machine” is set to be released in early March. For the girls, this music video concept is something that they have not done so far and it seems that the video was influenced by the atmosphere of the teaser. The thirty-second version of the teaser can be seen on Girls’ Generation’s official Japan Facebook page which was opened on February 24th, while the fifteen-second version will be broadcast on Japanese TV on February 25th. You can look up the translations of “Time Machine” in Soshified’s Lyrics Center Section  and also check out the thirty-second version of the teaser below.

Taeyeon Continues to MC “Gaon Chart Awards” Despite an Injury

Taeyeon Continues to MC "Gaon Chart Awards" Despite an Injury

Taeng - Gaon Chart Awards

Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon received praise when she injured her toe and continued to emcee the Gaon Chart Awards.

Taeyeon injured her toenail while she performed her MC duties with Joo Younghoon in “The First Gaon Chart K-pop Awards” that was held at the Samsung Card Hall in Blue Square.

Girls’ Generation’s Taeyeon and Yoona accepted the “Special Oricon Award” on behalf of all the members. After Yoona’s acceptance speech, she asked Taeyeon to deliver her own speech. At this time, Taeyeon said her acceptance speech despite still being in the MC stands.

At this, Joo Younghoon explained, “Taeyeon has ripped her toenail during the awards and she is still doing her duties as an MC while fighting through the pain.”

Taeyeon replied by saying, “You don’t have to say that with so much detail. I’ve only gotten hurt a little bit,” and eased the fans’ hearts.

But Taeyeon had to put on slippers instead of high heels because of her injury.

Fans expressed their sadness by saying, “If her toenail was flipped then the pain would be horrible”, “There should be limitations to dancing”, “Taeyeon is really admirable. She didn’t show her pain..She has more than enough rights to be the kid leader”, and, “Make sure to get medical attention for it”.
