Girls' Generation Sets a Record on the Gaon Chart and Nears One Million Album Sales
Girls’ Generation is looking to hit the “million seller” mark very soon. On May 11th, the Gaon Chart showed that Girls’ Generation's 3rd album, “The Boys”, which was released on October 19th of 2011, has officially passed the 400,000 sales mark as of April of 2012, with a total of 410,542 albums sold. This is the highest record achieved by any single album (excluding repackaged albums) since the beginning of the Gaon Chart in 2010. With “The Boys”, Girls' Generation has now sold a total of 978,887 albums in South Korea. Their second album, "Oh!", sold 218,552 copies, while their second repackage album, “Run Devil Run”, recorded 168,998 copies sold. Their third mini-album, “Hoot”, then sold 180,825 copies. Since the year 2000, the digital album market has grown exponentially while sales of physical albums have been stagnant. Experts say that selling a million physical copies in the age of digital media can be considered an achievement similar to legends such as Kim Gunmo and Shin Seunghoon, artists who sold over 10 million albums in the 1990s. Meanwhile, Girls’ Generation's first subunit group, Girls' Generation – TTS, is doing very well. Their first mini-album’s title song, “Twinkle”, recorded 604,870 downloads in its first week of release and won the top spot on the weekly download chart for the second week of May.
