[2011.07.30] Reuters Publishes Article About Girls' Generation's Global Appeal
Global news agency Reuters published an article earlier this week touting Girls' Generation's exploding popularity throughout the world. They cited the success of the recent SMTOWN Live in Paris concert, the girls' solo tour throughout Japan, as well as last week's concert in Seoul. The full article has been reposted below. --------------------------------------------------------------- (Reuters Life!) - South Korea's Girls Generation, already a hit group at home and throughout Asia, are set to broaden their appeal and go global, taking their brand of hit songs and tightly choreographed routines to Europe and beyond. The nine-strong line-up of 20-something telegenic young women again wowed fans from Asia on Sunday at a concert in Seoul's Olympic Stadium, having played to 140,000 Japanese fans in a series of concerts between May and July this year. Two recent concerts in the Tokyo Dome organized by Korean Broadcasting System saw 45,000 fans attend and have generated 7.2 billion won ($6.8 million) in revenues so far, according to the organizer Korean Broadcasting System (KBS). "After seeing the sensational response from fans, we are planning to broaden our perspective of concert, such as in Europe and South America, within this year," KBS Kwon Oh-jun, the producer of the Japanese concerts, told Reuters. Girls Generation is part of a cultural phenomenon called the "Korean Wave" or "Hallyu" comprising girl and boy bands as well as South Korean soaps. Reflecting Girls Generation widening global appeal, half of the songs played in Seoul on Sunday were in either English or Japanese. Industry experts say the Korean Wave has generated billions of dollars in revenues and some even say it will one day help re-unify North and South Korea. Two recent concerts in Paris by a group of South Korean bands, including Girls Generation, sold out their nightly 14,000 allocation of tickets almost as soon and they went on sale. "I remember one European fan from concert in Paris, who wrote down Yoon A (one of the band) so that covered up his arm. We were all impressed by the love of European fans." Tae-yeon, the lead singer of Girls' Generation told a press conference ahead of Sunday's Seoul concert. K-Pop's growing global fan base has seen the shares of S.M. Entertainment Co, the company that represents Girls Generation and other bands such as Super Junior, surge since their debut on the Seoul bourse. Fans in Germany have bombarded the Korean Cultural Center in Berlin and Korean Broadcasting System with requests that their favorite stars play in Berlin. "We are dying for K-pop stars to come, so we sent those letters because we couldn't just wait and do nothing. Hope our action would bring about change in K-pop stars arrival in Germany." 30-year-old Esther Klung, president of the German K-pop community, told Reuters. [2011.07.27] 2PM's Taecyeon Mentions Jessica on 'Strong Heart'
On the July 26th episode of SBS's Strong Heart, Jessica's name was mentioned when 2PM's Taecyeon appeared as a guest and talked about 2PM's promotional activities for their latest song "Hands Up". Known as the show that often veers away from the original topic, Taecyeon initially talked about the 2PM members wanting to ask f(x)'s Krystal to feature in their song. After he mentioned that he asked for Krystal's number through her older sister, Girls' Generation's Jessica, host Kang Hodong asked about their relationship and if Taecyeon was close to Jessica. After also being asked about why he had to go through Jessica and not f(x)'s Victoria who is Nickhun's partner in MBC "We Got Married", Kang Hodong proceeded to end the topic awkwardly by saying "We'll stop here to protect their privacy", bringing laughter to both the guests and the audience. 2PM and Girls' Generation were involved in plenty of collaborations like the 2010 end-of-year special stages as well as endorsements like Elite. It would thus be of no surprise if the members of both groups were friends. [2011.07.24] Girls’ Generation’s 2nd Tour, “We Missed You A Lot!”
Yuri…"Extraordinary scale, please anticipate it!" Yoona…"Tears? We should be giving you energy, but we're thankful that we can always take from you…" Tiffany…"Mature? We're no longer high school girls." Girls' Generation, who has gone from being the nation's girl group to Asia's number 1 group, has finally met up with their Korean fans after ages. On the afternoon of the 24th, Girls' Generation met up with the reporters in the Gymnastics Arena of the Seoul Olympic Stadium to have a press conference before the start of their 2nd performance of their 2nd solo concert titled "2011 GIRLS' GENERATION TOUR". At the conference, Girls' Generation's leader, Taeyeon, said that, "We are extremely happy to greet everyone after the 14 concerts held during the Japan Arena Tour. Even though we performed yesterday, we're still restless and can't wait to perform today." Girls' Generation first kick started their tour in December, 2009. After which, they performed in various parts of the world before they finally returned to Korea as matured women. When asked about what had changed since the first concert, Sunny answered, "We feel like we're more relaxed? A lot of foreign fans came, so even though it was a Korean concert, the feeling was different. The fact that there were fans from other countries watching the Korean concert made us enjoy the experience more, so we loved it." Yuri then added, "We hung from wires while performing, and we got to stand on a very lovely boat during another song too. We tried to include lots of fun elements in this concert." The ability to have props like these highlights the large-scale performances that can only be witnessed during Girls' Generation's concerts. Girls' Generation Second Concert, "Mature? We're 23 now.." /The Star 2 years after Girls' Generation's first concert, their heightened popularity, increased foreign fans, and maturity has particularly stood out. When asked whether their new concept emphasized their maturity, Girls' Generation's member, Tiffany, answered, "Nothing was particularly emphasized. We're no longer the high school girls that we were, but 23 year-olds. There was no need to emphasize our maturity because I think that we matured naturally over the time." At this, Sooyoung immediately commented, "There's no need to mention our age by number…" and this drew laughter from everyone. During the first performance of "2011 GIRLS' GENERATION TOUR" yesterday, Girls' Generation shed tears while singing "Complete". Yoona said, "The song 'Complete' is a song that moves us even if we're just listening to it on our own. But then all our fans held up banners which said 'We Missed You' during the song." She went on to explain the reason behind their tears and said, "We should've shown the fans good things since we've been away for so long. In the end, it was us who ended up being very much moved and we felt incredibly grateful towards the fans." The reporters then went on to ask Girls' Generation about their opinion on why they appeal to foreign fans so much, and member Sooyoung, responded, "From our songs which are written by Europeans, to our dances which are choreographed by Japanese, everything is very international. The Korean culture, international flavor and our group's personality mix to produce a very good album, so I actually think that it's more of the people who help us to compose our albums rather than us." Fans from Japan, Taiwan, Singapore and Europe travelled all the way to Seoul just to watch the "2011 GIRLS' GENERATION TOUR" which has suddenly changed into a global festival instead. Through today's performance, we hope to put up a wonderful show for everyone and share our energy with the fans." Girls' Generation is once again demonstrating its diverse fanbase as fans from all over the world gathered in South Korea to attend the girls' second solo concert, the 2011 GIRLS' GENERATION TOUR. Domestic fans along with overseas fans from countries like the United States, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong made up the 10,000 audience who filled up the stadium to watch the girls perform live for their second concert day earlier today. A fan from Boston, known as Eddie, smiled brightly and commented, "Seeing Girls' Generation directly made my heart seem to stop and tremble, I'm looking forward to them staging a comeback". The girls seemed to have known about the presence of international fans, as they tried to speak in other languages like English and Chinese to allow the audience to better understand them. Media crew from all over the world also joined in and participated in covering the concert, ranging from the China CCTW and Reuters to the Taiwan and Singapore press. Even though this marks the first Girls' Generation concert in South Korea for the year 2011, their skills have noticeably improved when compared to their first solo concert. The members commented that "We held a Japan Arena Tour and performed 14 times in the country, so we've grown a lot and will show you our polished skills." Covering 32 songs within three hours at each concert for the Japan tour, it became apparent that the girls would naturally improve with experience. Throughout the concert, Girls' Generation showed off their intense choreography and ran all over the stadium energetically to interact with the fans. Despite this, the girls still managed to sing most of their songs live, further impressing the audience present. The girls commanded attention from the opening stage where they emerged in striking outfits and intense expressions. They appeared in the middle of the stage with their song "Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)", projecting an image and aura that would lead fans to a realm of fantasy. The girls sang Japanese songs like "I'm in Love with the Hero" and Korean hit songs like "Hoot". They also presented elaborate stages like standing on moving boats on stage as they sang "My Child". The girls also did not disappoint with their overall image as they changed outfits periodically and yet still managing to keep the momentum going. With nine different members and colors, Girls' Generation also took advantage of the moment to highlight each member's brimming talents. Each of the girls took on different English songs to present their different strengths. Jessica left the audience breathless as she sang her rendition of "Almost" while playing the piano, while tallest member Sooyoung sang and danced to popular song "Sway". Seohyun, on the other hand, received applause after her surprising tap dance showcase. The concert as a whole moved fluidly and at a fast pace. The crowd sang together with the members especially during the more popular songs, and did fan chants to cheer the girls on. A college student from Suwon said, "The fans from different countries are all equally loved and I'm proud of Girls' Generation. K-Pop these days is very popular overseas that even we who are here can feel the heat." The highlight of the day, however, would have to be the special event initiated and organized by the fans themselves. They arranged for everyone in the audience to hold a small banner which said "We missed you" and to hold it up after the girls finished singing their song "Complete". The image of an integrated audience who held up the white paper in harmony brought tears to both fans and the girls alike. It was clear that the connection holding them together was not many-faceted, but rather one filled with pure love and understanding towards one another. Some of the members and parts of the audience could not stop crying even as the concert progressed. The concert also saw the attendance of massive stars like Super Junior members, Jung Ryeowon, Kim Soohyun, Kim Ahjoong and Park Minyoung. Park Seungil, an ex-professional basketball player who suffers from Lou Gehrig's disease and who shares a special relationship with the members was present as well. Girls' Generation's family members also came to show their support. The nine members of Girls' Generation held a press conference prior to the start of the concert to talk about topics like their popularity overseas. The second concert day has officially ended, and the second solo concert has managed to gather a total of 20,000 fans for the past two days. The girls will release more news about their overseas concerts in the coming future. You can view more press photos of the second solo concert here. Stay tuned for updates! [2011.07.23] Korean Newspaper Interviews Members of Soshified's Field Trip to Korea
On the 21st of July, 103 *American Girls' Generation fans flew to Seoul together at their own expense to attend the upcoming Girls' Generation's 2nd Tour. These fans met on the **international Girls' Generation forum, Soshified (Soshified.com), and they planned this trip to Korea together. As it is extremely difficult to find seats to attend music program shows, the ever eager group decided to consult the Los Angeles branch of Korean Tourism Organization, and they managed to procure enough seats for themselves. Therefore, not only will they be attending Girls' Generation's 2nd Tour, they will also be watching MBC's "Show! Music Core", and KBS 2TV's "Immortal Song 2". "I worked part-time at an exchange booth for months so that I could come and watch the Girls' Generation concert. I can't believe I'm going to see Girls' Generation up close…" said Julian Serbantez. Julian Serbantez is a 21 years-old university student from Chicago, USA, and he is part of a group of 103 Americans who flew half way around the world to Seoul, just to watch their idols, Girls' Generation, perform. His friend, 29 years-old Natasha Wadrington, who is also from Chicago, was present at the interview. Neither of them could contain their excitement when the reporters met with on the 22nd in a café near the City Hall Station in Seoul. When the interview started, Natasha excitedly shared with the reporters, "My iPod is filled with the songs by Girls' Generation. Now, I can actually hear them live!" The other person who was present at the interview, 28 years-old John Toss from New Mexico, also added, "I finally ate real kimchi stew!" As soon as the 3 youths met the reporters, they started singing praises for K-Pop. Serbantez, who became a K-Pop fan after he listened to Girls' Generation's "Gee" 2 years ago, said, "The cheerful beats are really addictive. Ever since then, I've spent about $5000 USD just on buying albums of K-Pop groups such as f(x) and KARA." Toss, who is a huge fan of Girls' Generation's Taeyeon and Sunny, said, "The feeling that we get from American singers is very distant. But because of reality shows such as 'Invincible Youth' and 'Running Man', I feel that it is much easier to connect with Korean singers because they seem so much more like regular humans." The 3 youths continued on by naming Korean idol groups such as T-Ara and Big Bang one after another, while occasionally using Korean words such as "It's okay" and "a little bit" during the conversation. They mentioned that ever since they've become interested in Korean idols, they've also taken an interest towards the Korean culture. Serbantez says that he has been learning Korean for a year, and Wadrington said that she learned about the Korean culture through her roommate back at home, and has also been self-teaching Korean through a mobile application. These fans even cook and eat authentic Korean food. Toss, who is from a place where Asian immigrants are not very common, said, "There are no Korean restaurants, so I looked up the recipe for kimchi on the internet, and made it myself a few months ago." Serbantez says that he goes to Koreatown in Chicago to buy steamed buns, red-bean buns, bibimbap, and other Korean foods. The 3 of them have only ever dreamed of visiting Korea, and this is their first time in Seoul. As such, they excitedly told the reporters that, "We can't believe we're able to experience the Korean culture and food that we've only been able to see on shows." When the reporters asked them if they had any particular wishes, they said, "We are going to get the autographs of the members of Girls' Generation at this Sunday's concert, no matter what." *Not all the people out of the 103 people are Americans. Only majority of them are. **The newspaper described Soshified as an American fansite but Soshified is rightfully an International fansite. [2011.07.22] Signs of 'Invincible Youth' Being a Huge Hit in Japan?
The KBS entertainment program "Invincible Youth" which ended last December in 2010 is slowly showing signs of being popular in Japan. Asahi Newspaper reported on the 19th that the "Invincible Youth" DVDs sold well when it was released last April. The newspaper introduced the show as one where you could see Hallyu idols without make up and who offered a wholesome image that could not be seen elsewhere. The episode where the members of the show including Girls' Generation Sunny visited Biei, Hokkaido in October 2009 was also mentioned, and the representative of Biei's tourism stated, "It has become a famous tourist location for Koreans. I didn't know that two days of filming would have this much of an impact." Even though "Invincible Youth" has reached its end, the program's increasing popularity in Japan is most likely due to the presence of the Hallyu wave. Leading groups like Girls' Generation and KARA have attracted an overwhelming following, and with the entrance of more Korean idol groups into the Japanese music industry, interests in anything K-Pop related is bound to remain at an all-time high.
